Can Virtual Reality enable users to access flow state more easily?

There is little doubt that reaching flow helps to achieve more and makes tasks more enjoyable, but can VR help to reach flow state more easily?

Flow is a state of optimal experience where a person is fully absorbed in an activity, typically to the point of losing track of time and becoming completely immersed in the task at hand. VR technology can create highly immersive experiences that can help users achieve a flow state by engaging their senses and creating an environment that feels real and engaging.

One of the benefits of VR is that it can provide a sense of presence and immersion that is difficult to achieve through traditional media. VR technology can create highly realistic simulations of environments and scenarios, which can make users feel like they are truly present in the experience. This sense of presence can help users become fully engaged in the activity, which is a key aspect of achieving flow.

In the case of EarthScapeVR we are using views of Earth from space, an environment which has been shown to have long lasting and far reaching effects for those who have been lucky enough to witness it. We have found, through independent research, that people who experience our Earth from space simulations report some of the same things that astronauts report, specifically that our Earth from space VR also induces feelings of awe connectedness to nature. It is possible that flow is more easily reached because this experience of viewing the Earth from space can be awe-inspiring and create a sense of wonder and curiosity, which are characteristics commonly associated with flow states.

Additionally, VR experiences can be designed to provide users with clear goals and feedback, which are also important elements of achieving flow. By providing users with specific objectives and immediate feedback on their performance, VR experiences can help users stay focused and motivated, which can also facilitate a flow state. We are currently working on ways to incorporate feedback into our programmes, which we hope will further enhance users ability to access transcendental states such as flow states.

While more research is needed to fully understand the relationship between VR and flow, there is strong evidence to suggest that VR has the potential to be a powerful tool for facilitating flow state.
